A&W to open new standalone restaurant in Sydney
Fast food lovers will soon be able to purchase their favourite classic burger closer to the downtown core.
The iconic A&W restaurant chain will open a new 2,200 square-foot standalone restaurant, featuring a drive-thru and 75-seat dinning area, located next to the Bank of Montreal on Prince Street in Sydney.
The Cape Breton Regional Municipality issued a building and development permit earlier this month. Work has already begun at the location.
The chain has three locations in Cape Breton with restaurants in Glace Bay, Port Hawkesbury as well as the Mayflower Mall in Sydney.
“Definitely being back on the street is something we’ve been anticipating for a while and we’ve been able to secure that location with Crombie, owners of the property, and franchisee Bill Colbourne,” said Pierre Clement, A&W director of real estate for Atlantic Canada and Quebec.
“We feel very good about the new location, right across from the cinema, very close to downtown, and we’re on one of the main streets – we’re very excited about it.”
The three other locations will remain open.
“We definitely want to ensure that we offer full services and conveniences to the general public and this falls within our plans,” said Clement. “There’s a representation of quick service restaurants throughout Cape Breton and as far as A&W is concerned (right now) we don’t have a full freestanding location and we are probably one of the only ones that don’t.”
The new restaurant will be open 24 hours a day, just like the restaurant chain’s competitors within the municipality.
“We got very strong results within the Cape Breton area, so we are very confident about this location,” said Clement. “We think it will be a winner for us.”
Clement couldn’t confirm exactly how many people the restaurant would hire, but he expects somewhere between 40-50 employees.
The restaurant is expected to open by the end of October, weather and construction permitting.
When asked about the possibility of other A&W locations in Cape Breton, Clement said there are plans for further expansion, but for now the chain is focused on the opening of the new Sydney location.
