It is with heart­felt sad­ness that we an­nounce the peace­ful pass­ing of Mark Royal, age 36, on Mon­day, May 15, 2017 sur­rounded by love. He was a man of strength, in­tegrity, eter­nal op­ti­mism and per­se­ver­ance.

Born in Glace Bay, 1981, Mark was the son of Wal­ter (Irene) and the late Chris­tene (Mathe­son) Royal.

Upon grad­u­at­ing from the At­lantic Po­lice Acad­emy in 2000, Mark be­gan his 17 year ca­reer with the Cape Bre­ton Re­gional Po­lice, be­gin­ning on Pa­trol which led to the Street Crime/ Drug Sec­tion and cur­rently De­tec­tive Con­sta­ble. He was an ac­tive com­mu­nity of­fi­cer and vol­un­teered his time when­ever needed. Mark played a sig­nif­i­cant role in the an­nual Cops Against Cancer fundraiser, a cause that was near and dear to his heart. Also, while en­joy­ing his ca­reer, he formed many amaz­ing brother­hood bonds.

He was an avid sports fan, be­hind the bench and on the ice. He al­ways en­joyed trav­el­ing to cheer on his fa­vorite teams which in­cluded the Bos­ton Red Sox, Colorado Avalanche and New Eng­land Pa­tri­ots.

Mark is sur­vived by his best friend and the love of his life, his wife, Melissa-Sue (An­der­son); his fur ba­bies, Chloe, Lexi and Zoe (“the girls”); sis­ter, Terri (John Thomas), Monc­ton, NB; brother, Forbes (Tanya), Glace Bay; beloved Nana, Jean Mathe­son, Re­serve Mines; proud and nur­tur­ing mother and fa­therin-law, Colleen and Pon­cho An­der­son; brother (in-law), Ryan An­der­son and cho­sen sis­ter, Hi­lary Tomp­kins. Also sur­viv­ing are cher­ished neph­ews, Jar­rett, Austin, Ben; sev­eral aunts; un­cles and cousins. Be­sides his mother, Mark was pre­de­ceased by his ma­ter­nal grand­fa­ther, Forbes Mathe­son; pa­ter­nal grand­par­ents, Muriel and Wal­ter Royal.

In hon­or­ing Mark’s wishes, there will be no vis­i­ta­tion, cre­ma­tion has taken place. A fu­neral ser­vice will be held 11 a.m. on Satur­day, May 20, 2017 at War­den United Church, Glace Bay. Rev. Dave MacLean, Rev. Carol Gil­lard and Lay Min­is­ter, Martha Mac­Don­ald of­fi­ci­at­ing.

Please help us ful­fill Mark’s wishes and join us in cel­e­brat­ing his life on Sun­day, May 21, 2017 from 6-11 p.m. at Fla­vor 19 (Lin­gan Golf Course). Come laugh, rem­i­nisce and make new mem­o­ries.

The fam­ily would like to thank Dr. O’Brien and Crys­tal, Dr.’s, Ron MacCormick, Si­mon Walling, Anne Frances D’Intino, the nurs­ing staff in the cancer cen­ter, ER and An Cala unit for their com­pas­sion­ate care.

Do­na­tions may be made to the Cana­dian Cancer So­ci­ety in re­mem­brance of Mark Royal Cops Against Cancer (Cape Bre­ton).
