Incumbent Liberal MLA Michel Samson has served the riding since 1998, winning elections in 1998, 1999, 2003, 2006 ,2009, and 2013.
The area is known for its fishing, and tourism, as well as being home to Point Tupper, with companies like Port Hawkesbury Paper, NiStar Energy and the proposed Bear Head liquified natural gas plant.
IMPORTANCE IN THE ELECTION:
This riding has belonged to the Liberals since 1998. Incumbent Michel Samson has served in a variety of ministerial roles including as interim leader.
Richmond County was named in honour of Sir Charles Lennox, 4th Duke of Richmond and the Governor General of British North America from 1818 to 1819. It has existed since 1835 and was incorporated in 1879.
