Murder accused to provide update on lawyer search
SYDNEY — A new Supreme Court trial date may have to be set for Ben Eoin man facing a first-degree murder charge after the accused and his defence counsel parted company.
Brandon James Berthiaume, 26, is charged in relation to the June 25, 2015, shooting death of 25-yearold Brandon Kelly. The shooting occurred outside Kelly’s home in Reserve Mines. Berthiaume is also charged with attempted murder. He is alleged to have also fired shots at a second man who was with Kelly at the time.
The judge and jury trial is scheduled to proceed Oct. 2 but the date may change in order to give new counsel time to prepare. Berthiaume is now to return to Supreme Court May 29 to provide an update on his search for a new defence lawyer.
