Mur­der ac­cused to pro­vide up­date on lawyer search

SYD­NEY — A new Supreme Court trial date may have to be set for Ben Eoin man fac­ing a first-de­gree mur­der charge af­ter the ac­cused and his de­fence coun­sel parted com­pany.

Bran­don James Berthiaume, 26, is charged in re­la­tion to the June 25, 2015, shoot­ing death of 25-yearold Bran­don Kelly. The shoot­ing oc­curred out­side Kelly’s home in Re­serve Mines. Berthiaume is also charged with at­tempted mur­der. He is al­leged to have also fired shots at a sec­ond man who was with Kelly at the time.

The judge and jury trial is sched­uled to pro­ceed Oct. 2 but the date may change in or­der to give new coun­sel time to pre­pare. Berthiaume is now to re­turn to Supreme Court May 29 to pro­vide an up­date on his search for a new de­fence lawyer.
