REJECTION

On this date in 1980, more than 58 per cent of Que­bec vot­ers re­jected a ref­er­en­dum pro­posal that would have al­lowed Que­bec to ne­go­ti­ate sovereignty-as­so­ci­a­tion with the rest of Canada. The day also marked the first live cov­er­age of a Cana­dian ref­er­en­dum.

HIS­TORIC FLIGHT

On May 21, 1927, Amer­i­can Charles Lind­bergh landed at Le Bour­get Field out­side Paris af­ter his his­toric solo flight across the At­lantic. Lind­bergh’s trip from Long Is­land, N.Y., lasted 33-anda-half hours. It’s con­sid­ered one of the great mile­stones in avi­a­tion his­tory.

CUR­TAIN CALL

On May 22, 1992, in one of the most pub­li­cized de­par­tures in TV his­tory, Johnny Car­son ap­peared for the last time as host of “The Tonight Show.” He had taken over the show from Jack Paar in Oc­to­ber 1962.
