Ethel Marie com­pleted her earthly jour­ney peace­fully at home on Fri­day, May 19, 2017 sur­rounded with the love and prayers of her lov­ing hus­band of 49 years, Ron­ald MacDougall; her sons, Al­lan MacDougall (Carmel Bragg) and Stephen (Jen­nifer) MacDougall; her daugh­ter, Jane (Ian) Mac­Don­ald, and her two pre­cious grand­daugh­ters, Amelia and Kenna.

She also leaves be­hind to mourn her sis­ters, Geral­dine (Ben) Kuzmicz), Regina, Sask., Jeanne Hen­schel, Hal­i­fax, Pa­tri­cia (Barry) John­ston, Char­lot­te­town and Lorna A. Steele, Hal­i­fax.

Born in North Syd­ney on De­cem­ber 18, 1940, Ethel Marie was the daugh­ter of the late Lawrence A. and Dinah (Bag­nell) Steele. She was a mem­ber of Holy Fam­ily Parish, Syd­ney Mines. She was a beloved and de­voted wife and mother.

Ethel Marie grew up in North Syd­ney, Cape Bre­ton, where she at­tended St. Joseph’s School. She con­tin­ued her ed­u­ca­tion at Mount Saint Vin­cent Col­lege, ob­tain­ing a BSc in Home Eco­nomics and BEd. She also held a Grade Eight Pi­ano Des­ig­na­tion from the Royal Con­ser­va­tory of Mu­sic. Ethel was em­ployed with the Cape Bre­ton Vic­to­ria Re­gional School Board un­til her re­tire­ment in 2001. Her teach­ing ca­reer started at St. John XXIII High School, Dor­val Quebec, be­fore re­turn­ing to North Syd­ney to work at Thomp­son High, then Syd­ney Mines Ju­nior High and re­tir­ing from Memo­rial High School. Ethel was known for her rap­port and her warmth with stu­dents.

Ethel was a com­mit­ted mother to her fam­ily, al­ways lov­ing, sup­port­ing and car­ing. She will al­ways be re­mem­bered for her “pre­sen­ta­tion and cre­ativ­ity” at home and at work.

At this time our fam­ily would like to ex­press our deep ap­pre­ci­a­tion to the Pal­lia­tive Care, VON nurses, and home­care staff who made Ethel’s days as peace­ful and com­fort­able as pos­si­ble.

Visi­ta­tion for Ethel MacDougall was held on Sun­day, May 21, 2017, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in J.M. Jobes Fu­neral Home, 635 Main St., Syd­ney Mines. A cel­e­bra­tion of her life took place Mon­day at 10 a.m. in Holy Fam­ily Church, Syd­ney Mines, with Fr. An­gus MacDougall of­fi­ci­at­ing.
