A celebration of girl guides from across Cape Breton Island will take place this weekend.

The Girl Guides of Canada Ceilidh Area will host close to 500 girls in an overnight camp event today at the Cape Breton County Exhibition Grounds in North Sydney.

The event will feature a number of activities for participants ages five to 18-plus.

The day begins at 11 a.m. with a parade, starting at the Emera Centre, travelling down King Street, turning onto High Street to the exhibition grounds, where an open house will also take place from 2-4 p.m. for the general public.

“The idea of the event is to get us out there in the public eye,” said Gail Leighton, Ceilidh Area commissioner.

“We’re always trying to increase membership within the organization and we are hoping that this event will actually increase membership for our following guiding year (2017-18).”

Aside from the open house, the guides will participate in roundtable activities including making crafts, taking part in science experiments with Cape Breton University students as well as participating in active living and drama activities with Kostume Kapers.

The day will wrap up with all girl guiders taking part in a campfire and singalong this evening. The campers will stay overnight, sleeping in tents, before the event

wraps up on Sunday.

“All the different districts do their own type of camps, and we do area events, but we haven’t had one this huge in a while,” said Leighton, when asked how often these events take place.

Leighton said the organization sees a slight increase in membership every year.

“This year we had more of an increase with our guider members then we did with the girls, but that’s a good thing because now we have the guiders in place and we are hoping to open some new units in the fall.”

The open house will also be an opportunity for new members to register for the 2017-18 year. A membership booth will be set up for parents to register their child for September.

Those who register before June 7 will have the chance to win a gift certificate for the girl guides store as well as a one-year free membership, valued at $100.
