Glace Bay

With sad­dened hearts we an­nounce the pass­ing of a lov­ing hus­band, fa­ther, grand­fa­ther and brother, Tom, age 93, passed away peace­fully at Har­bour­stone En­hanced Care, Syd­ney, on Thurs­day, May 25, 2017.

Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Thomas and Cather­ine (Cummings) O’Brien and was a long­time member of the for­mer St. John’s Church and more re­cently St. Anne’s Church, both in Glace Bay

Tom was a coal miner with Devco and re­tired from #26 Col­liery af­ter 43 years of ser­vice. He was a true out­doors­man, en­joy­ing all of his times hunt­ing and fish­ing; even when he came home empty-handed. He also en­joyed the times he spent gar­den­ing and bowl­ing with the Devco Col­liery League. Tom was a very easy go­ing and fun lov­ing man who truly loved his fam­ily.

Tom is sur­vived by his lov­ing wife of 73 years, Lau­ren­tia (MacNeil); daugh­ter, Rose (Dan) Mur­rin, Glace Bay; grand­chil­dren, Danielle (Henry) Glace Bay and Dana (Marie) Syd­ney.; great­grand­chil­dren, Gar­rett, Jor­dan, Keagan, Daniel and great-great-grand­child, Aria: He will also be sadly missed by three sib­lings, Alphonse, Glace Bay and Jack and Ellen, both of Ont.; nu­mer­ous nieces, neph­ews, in-laws and friends. Be­sides his par­ents, he was also pre­de­ceased by a brother, Michael and sis­ters, Loretta, An­nie-Mae and Marie.

Cre­ma­tion has taken place un­der the care and di­rec­tion of V.J. McGil­livray Fu­neral Home, 16 Re­serve St., Glace Bay.

A Fu­neral Mass of­fi­ci­ated by Fr. Leo Boone, will be cel­e­brated at St. Anne’s Church, Fri­day, June 02 at 1 p.m. Fol­low­ing the Mass, all are in­vited to join with Tom’s fam­ily at a re­cep­tion in the church foyer.

In­ter­ment will be in St. John’s Par­ish Ceme­tery, Glace Bay.

Memo­rial dona­tions in Tom’s mem­ory may be made to the Alzheimer’s So­ci­ety.

At this time we would like to sin­cerely thank the staff of Went­worth Court, Har­bour­stone En­hanced Care for their com­pas­sion­ate care, con­cern and for tak­ing such great care of him.
