A Glace Bay club that recently launched a free senior’s program now wants to take things to the next level.

Bobby Donovan, treasurer of the Glace Bay Y’s Men’s and Y’s Women’s Club, says they kicked off free bowling several weeks ago for seniors at the Town Centre Lanes but now they want to add more activities and events.

“It’s a senior’s program so there should be seniors running it,” he said.

Donovan said the club applied for and received an $18,000 grant from the federal government’s New Horizons for Seniors program to run a local seniors project for a year.

“We felt there needed to be more going on for seniors.”

He said they currently have about 20 seniors involved in the free senior’s bowling which is every Friday from 12 noon-2 p.m.

Donovan said the free bowling will continue and in the meantime they’ve set up a room in the Knox hall with a dartboard, pool table and music available anytime.

“If seniors don’t want to bowl they can come up and play darts or play cards. It’s all there for them.”

He said they’d like to get other programs underway but

they need a senior to step up to help. He said they have three brand new laptops still in boxes and some computers ready for a computer class to be set up as well as a full gym that seniors can use as well as walk around the walking track.

“There is even a movie projector there if someone wants to come in and run a movie some afternoon,” he said.

“If they want to have painting classes, hold a little knitting class or dancing class, we can set up whatever they want to do. The thing is we need someone to step up to help, we can’t do everything ourselves.”

Donovan said they want this program to run well and then next year they could reapply for a three-year program.

Anyone wishing to help can contact the club at 902-8490279 or 902-849-6665

Donovan said as well the Y’s Men’s Club has ordered laser tag equipment to give the kids something to do over the summer.

He said the program will start sometime in July and dates and times will be announced when finalized.
