Menelik Hall

Cape Breton Post - - Weekend -

Descendants of 18th-century Africans and 20th-century Caribbean people who worked in coal and steel, are part of the composition of Whitney Pier.

• Menelik Hall was named for highly respected King Menelik II of Ethiopia (reigned 18651913).

• The Hall opened in 1936 and was used predominately by members of the West Indian community for those involved in social activism.

• Marcus Garvey spoke there in the 1930s. It is still an important part of Whitney Pier today.
