Descendants of 18th-century Africans and 20th-century Caribbean people who worked in coal and steel, are part of the composition of Whitney Pier.
• Menelik Hall was named for highly respected King Menelik II of Ethiopia (reigned 18651913).
• The Hall opened in 1936 and was used predominately by members of the West Indian community for those involved in social activism.
• Marcus Garvey spoke there in the 1930s. It is still an important part of Whitney Pier today.
