On this date in 2016, 16-yearold Cana­dian swim­mer Penny Olek­siak picked up Canada’s first gold medal at the Rio Olympics, ty­ing with Amer­i­can Si­mone Manuel for the gold medal in the women’s 100-me­tre freestyle in an Olympic record 52.70 sec­onds. As for other firsts: Olek­siak be­came the first Cana­dian to win four medals at a sin­gle Sum­mer Games (adding to a but­ter­fly sil­ver and a pair of bronze in the freestyle re­lays); the youngest Cana­dian gold medal­list; the first Cana­dian to win three or more medals be­fore turn­ing 17; the first Cana­dian woman to win an Olympic medal of any colour in the 100-me­tre freestyle event, dat­ing back to 1912. She’s also the first Olympic gold medal­list born in this mil­len­nium.
