Lt.-Gen. Roméo Dallaire
- He spent 37 years in the military before retiring in 2000
- He served as the commander of the United Nations Assistance Mission during the Rwandan genocide in 1994
- Dallaire, along with a few others, disobeyed the command to withdraw and remained in Rwanda to protect those who had sought refuge with the UN forces
- He’s been public with his diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder
- He was appointed to the Senate as a Liberal in 2005 by former prime minister Paul Martin and resigned from the position in 2014
