Stu­dents will learn about trades

PORT HAWKESBURY — A one­day Skills Canada-Nova Sco­tia ca­reer ex­plo­ration event will give about 70 ju­nior and high school stu­dents the op­por­tu­nity to ex­plore skilled trade and tech­nol­ogy ca­reer op­tions in the en­ergy sec­tor.

The 15th an­nual Skilled Fu­tures in En­ergy event will be held today at the Strait cam­pus of the Nova Sco­tia Com­mu­nity Col­lege in Port Hawkesbury.

The Strait Re­gional School Board stu­dents in Grades 9, 10 and 11 will par­tic­i­pate in hands-on work­shops rang­ing from marine en­gi­neer­ing to steam­fit­ting/pip­efit­ting and weld­ing. “Through Skilled Fu­tures in En­ergy, stu­dents might be learn­ing to op­er­ate a marine ves­sel one hour, and then con­struct­ing an elec­tri­cal com­po­nent the next,” Robin Lor­way, ex­ec­u­tive di­rec­tor of Skills Canada-Nova Sco­tia, said in a re­lease Tues­day.
