Wildcats boys, Marauders girls post wins on opening night
The Sydney Academy Wildcats boys and Memorial Marauders girls picked up where they left off on Tuesday.
The teams that captured their respective divisions at the annual tipoff tournament opened the 2017-18 Cape Breton High School Basketball League with victories on their respective courts.
At Sydney Academy, the Wildcats boys posted a 98-58 victory over the Riverview Royals, in a rematch of the tipoff final.
Jason Callaghan led the Wildcats and all scorers with 21 points, while Dante Giovannetti followed with 19, Michale Clarke scored 14 and Adam Callaghan netted 11. For Riverview, Corson O’Rourke scored 14 points and Ethan Merlin chipped in 10.
In Sydney Mines, the host Memorial girls were paced by Belle McKee with 13 points in a 69-45 victory over the visiting Glace Bay Panthers.
Sarah Taylor scored 12 as well for Memorial, while Christina Thomas scored 11 and Makayla MacKenzie added 10. Memorial held a 35-22 lead at halftime.
Glace Bay replied with a game-high 19-point effort from Emily MacLeod. Kassie MacKinnon scored 10.
In other girls action, the Riverview Royals posted a 72-59 win over the Sydney Academy Wildcats at SA gym.
Haily MacLeod led the Royals attack with 18 points, followed by Nalini Maharaj with 16 and both Katie MacDonald and Taylor Coleman with 10 apiece.
For Sydney Academy, Amy Lynch scored 18, Cassidy Laporte followed with 16 and Alisha Hoban netted 15 in the setback.
Riverview held a 36-25 advantage at the half.
League action continues on two fronts tonight. The Memorial Marauders boys will host the Glace Bay Panthers at 6:30 p.m., while the Breton Education Centre Bears will challenge the SAERC Saints at BEC gym, another 6:30 p.m. start.
