North Syd­ney man elects Supreme Court trial

SYD­NEY — A 44-year-old North Syd­ney man has elected a Supreme Court judge and jury trial on charges that in­clude theft over $5,000.

Ja­son Richard Ben­nett of Cale­do­nia Street is also charged with pos­ses­sion of stolen prop­erty over $5,000. The of­fences are al­leged to have oc­curred in Syd­ney last Nov. 20 and in­volve a theft from a Syd­ney op­ti­cal com­pany.

Ben­nett, who con­tin­ues his re­lease on con­di­tions, is now sched­uled to have a pre­lim­i­nary hear­ing Jan. 7. A co-ac­cused pleaded guilty ear­lier this year to theft over $5,000 and was sen­tenced to a 62-day jail sen­tence fol­lowed a one-year pro­ba­tion pe­riod.
