Bells of Peace staged Sunday at sundown

-

SYDNEY MINES — Church bells will ring out in communities across Canada this weekend in remembrance of lives lost fighting for peace.

Rev. Marion Barclay MacKay of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Sydney Mines said the Bells of Peace initiative will take place at sundown on Sunday. “Part of this is to commemorate the spontaneous eruption of bells that were tolled when the armistice was signed, but in particular for this observance it is to remember those who gave their lives in the effort of the First World War,” said Barclay Mackay.

The observance marks the 100th anniversary of the signing of an armistice between Germany and the Allied Forces that would spell the end of the First World War.

In addition to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian, other Sydney Mines churches taking part are Trinity Anglican, Carman United and Clyde Avenue Baptist.

The bells will be tolled a hundred times at five second intervals, beginning at 4:33 p.m.
