Riverview hands out athletic awards

COXHEATH — All four major team sports were represente­d when Riverview High School recently announced the winners of its 2019-2020 athletic awards.

Julia Currie and Emily Phillipo were honoured as the school's female athletes of the year, while Michael MacMullen and Josh Crocker were named male athletes of the year.

Currie was also recognized as Riverview's Division 1 girls soccer most complete player and as the Division 1 girls basketball defensive MVP. Phillipo was named the most valuable player and top offensive player on the girls Division 1 volleyball team.

MacMullen was also given the nod as the boys hockey team's most valuable player, while Crocker was the junior varsity boys soccer offensive MVP and shared Division 1 boys basketball MVP honours with Mitchell Mersereau, the latter who also copped the award as Riverview's male scholarath­lete of the year. Emma MacPhee won the female scholar-athlete of the year.

Other major award winners included Ella Bottomley who was given the most outstandin­g individual athletic achievemen­t award as the intermedia­te girls cross country running provincial champion.

Team MVP awards were also handed out to Tighe Hussey-MacLeod (JV boys basketball), Gareth MacKinnon (boys cross country running), Corson O'Rourke and Brett MacMullin (boys baseball), AJ Ley (boys golf), Chanapakor­n Aroontheer­apoj (JV boys soccer), Michael Dermody (Division 1 boys soccer), Reece Brown (JV girls basketball offensive MVP), Alayah Jeddore (JV girls basketball defensive MVP and JV2 girls volleyball MVP), Rebecca MacKeigan (Division 1 girls basketball offensive MVP), Shaelyn Lahey (JV girls volleyball) and Breanna Lane (JV girls soccer).
