Consolidating the DND/CAF Footprint in the NCR at the Carling Campus
Defence Headquarters Transformation Project
What it is
The Carling Campus project will consolidate thousands of Defence Team members within the National Capital Region (NCR) into one inter-connected, state-of-the-art facility. This consolidation will reduce the Defence headquarters’ accommodation footprint in the NCR by over 50 per cent. The new headquarters will provide both a modern and healthy workplace, through its natural setting comprising acres of green space and numerous collaborative, open work spaces. Use of some downtown offices will continue and NDHQ operational elements will remain at 1600 Star Top Road. Other facilities will continue to accommodate many members of the organization, including the Louis St. Laurent Building, a new building at 455 Boulevard de la Carrière, parts of the National Printing Bureau, and the Hôtel de Ville building in Gatineau.
Why it matters
This is a major step forward in strengthening the Defence Team. Located at 3500 Carling Avenue, the Carling Campus will bring military and civilian members of the Defence Team within the National Capital Region together at a common location. While this consolidation will lead to cost efficiencies, it will also mean increased effectiveness and efficiency within the workplace, and will strengthen departmental security.
• December 2010: Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC) purchased the Carling Campus for DND/CF occupancy.
• 2011: Planning began to move members of the Defence Team based in the National Capital Region to the new headquarters.
• Currently: Plans to prepare the campus and to move Defence Team members are in progress. Minimizing the impact on operations, and members’ quality of life, are key priorities in migration planning while achieving affordable solutions. Move schedules will become more clearly established as the planning process evolves.
How it’s being done
The relocation of thousands of Defence personnel to the new campus will be a complex process and detailed planning, in collaboration with PWGSC, will ensure Defence Team members continually have an effective workplace to carry out their responsibilities as seamlessly as possible. This is an exciting time to be a member of the Defence Team, as the challenges of the future are being innovatively addressed today.
