A 70-year-old woman is fighting for her life in hospital after being struck by a car Wednesday night.

Edmonton city police said the 70-year-old woman was crossing 87 Avenue at 169 Street in a marked crosswalk at 7:45 p.m. when she was hit by a 2013 Nissan Altima. That crosswalk is equipped with a full set of traffic lights.

Investigators believe the car was travelling north on 169 Street before turning left onto 87 Avenue when it struck the woman.

The pedestrian suffered multiple serious life-threatening injuries and remained in hospital in critical condition Thursday.

While the police major collision investigation unit continued to look into the circumstances surrounding the crash, police do not believe speed or alcohol were factors. Charges are pending against a 47-year-old male driver of the Nissan.

The crosswalk is the same one where 83-year-old Mary Lynch was struck and killed by an ETS bus on Oct. 4, 2016.

Police work at the scene of an accident involving a car and a pedestrian along 87 Avenue at 169 Street on Wednesday.
