A 34-year-old man is facing multiple firearms charges after police seized five guns and ammunition in Sherwood Place, an acreage development just east of Sherwood Park.

City police and RCMP found three semi-automatic rifles — one illegal and two non-restricted — an illegal pump-action shotgun, and a non-restricted rifle after searching a home on Aug. 5 around 5 p.m. Officers also found more than 300 rounds of ammunition, overcapacity magazines, a stolen Canadian Armed Forces jacket and a stolen flatbed trailer.

The recovered guns include a CK VZ 58 Sporter, a pump-action shotgun, a GSG-MP40 rifle, an SKS rifle and a Remington Model 700 rifle.

“We are seeing an increase in firearms, especially rifles and shotguns, on the street which in turn can and has led to an increase in violent crime,” said Sgt. Eric Stewart with the Edmonton police firearms investigation unit, in a news release. “Between January and Aug. 11 of this year, there have been 83 shooting incidents in the city.”

Thomas Ogilvie has been arrested and charged with two counts of possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition, two counts of possession of a prohibited weapon and possession of firearm obtained by crime, among other charges.

In February 2019, he pleaded guilty to one charge of possession of a weapon dangerous to the public and was given a firearm prohibition, court documents show.

Edmonton Police Services has seized 681 firearms during the first seven months of this year, compared to 762 in 2019, 642 in 2018 and 644 in 2017, according to data provided by police.
