“Modern women are not going to be dictated to,” says George Sharp, executive vice-president of Jones New York, which has been outfitting chic professionals since 1970. “In the ’80s, you almost had to look masculine to be taken seriously. Those rules are broken now.” Wendy Hirschberg Clurman, the brand’s fashion director, agrees. “Women’s lives have changed,” she says, noting that working women’s wardrobes must also fit with their post-9-to-5 lives. To help, Hirschberg Clurman cites four items as fashion essentials: “If you have a black blazer, a black sheath, a black pencil skirt and jeans, you’re pretty much set. You mix them any which way.”
