Corseting your waist is as useless as it is dangerous. “Wearing a corset for prolonged periods can restrict breathing and cause abdominal pain and even nerve damage,” says Dr. Dara Maker, a family physician at Women’s College Hospital in Toronto. GYM TIME “Waist training is not going to change the shape of your body,” says Mark Hendricks, regional group fitness trainer for Equinox Fitness, who believes that standing ab exercises are the most effective. He says to skip crunches and try “Frankensteins”: Beginning with feet hip-width apart, raise one leg, keeping it straight, to hip height, and then extend the opposite arm out to touch toes. Repeat on the other side. ■
