If you’ve got a big event ahead, get strategic with your workouts. That’s the message in Jennifer Cohen’s Strong Is the New Skinny— our new fave fitness book. Here are her top three tips on how to get the results you want.

Mastering a pull-up will build upper-body strength and give you a V-line taper. When your back and shoulders are toned, you look 10 to 15 pounds thinner on the red carpet because of the visual perception.

“Shock” your body fit. Mix up your workouts so you are constantly confusing your muscles, changing the exercises you do and their duration. Try to switch it up every four to six weeks.

Eat water-dense foods to detoxify and shed water weight. Foods like apples, which also have fibre, keep you full, and incorporating chia seeds into your meals helps to reduce inflammation and burn fat.
