“When you’re at a party and you meet some­one new, one of the first ques­tions asked is, typ­i­cally, ‘What do you do for a liv­ing?’ Peo­ple de­fine them­selves largely in this way,” says Mat­tingly. “Re­search we’ve done with our col­league Kevin McIntyre at Trin­ity Univer­sity shows that peo­ple who work at jobs that pro­mote self-growth are less likely to leave the com­pany, have lower stress, are less likely to be burned out and are bet­ter em­ploy­ees.”
