Tinkering & tailoring
After six years as creative director at LOFT, Austyn Zung is doing double duty and taking on the same role at Ann Taylor. We chatted with the Oscar de la Renta alum about her vision for the brand, honed from a lifetime of travel and observing the women around her.
Abolishing the “work wardrobe” “It’s so funny to hear people say ‘Wear it to work’ when you just buy clothes, put them on and go to work and that just happens to be what you’re wearing.” Springtime in Cuba “This collection was loosely inspired by the idea of Hemingway in Havana—a rugged elegance. Hemingway is this alluring figure, but he lived a rugged life in the beauty of Havana, with all its colours and vegetation.” Learning from Oscar de la Renta “I travelled with him a lot; we’d be walking through the streets of Rome at 12:30 at night—the man never wanted to shut down! He never wanted to waste a moment, and that really taught me to enjoy life.” Getting inspired…the old-fashioned way “I have to be surrounded by visual chaos. I collect photographs and images from my travels to India, Brazil and Turkey. Now the world is on Pinterest, but this is how it started—my inspiration wall is Pinterest.”
