Books can be lovely trav­el­ling com­pan­ions—es­pe­cially if they re­late to your desti­na­tion. Not long be­fore my flight landed in Quito, Ecuador, I was climb­ing the jagged rocks of the nearby Chimb­o­razo vol­cano along­side nat­u­ral­ist Alexan­der von Humboldt. Okay, not lit­er­ally: I was ex­pe­ri­enc­ing his 1802 climb via an au­dio­book. Im­mers­ing my­self in this ex­plo­ration tale height­ened my an­tic­i­pa­tion for my jour­ney to the Gala­pa­gos, where three ocean cur­rents—in­clud­ing one called the “Humboldt”—meet. christiNA REYNOLDS
