This year’s ELLE Canada Graduate Award in Fashion winner, Megan Jonk, is an anthropology grad from Toronto’s Ryerson University who lives in Dubai, where she co-founded the design studio oe-o. Her winning thesis was a photo series depicting a handmade dress shot using different filters to express the “lenses” of individual experience and their effect on our perception of fashion. Now, Jonk and her partner, Hernan Hoentsch, design interpretations of the traditional abaya (typically black or ornately embroidered) with a minimalist aesthetic. “My master’s was in contemporary Middle Eastern fashion consumption, so I was able to bring research and fashion together in an interesting way,” says Jonk.
