FROM 1813 to 2016

ELLE (Canada) - - Radar -

At first blush, Eligible, Curtis Sittenfeld’s modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice— in which Jane is pregnant via IVF, Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth are enemies with benefits and Longbourn is in Cincinnati—should have Austenophiles taking to the streets in genteel outrage. But something about its biting wit, its subversion with a heart of gold and the uncompromising way Sittenfeld skewers how we live today—from Lydia as a holier-than-thou paleo CrossFit enthusiast to Mr. Collins as a skin-crawling Silicon Valley wunderkind—makes us think that this is just the kind of smart, self-aware book that Austen herself might have written in 2016.
