Fashion (Canada) - - Culture Special - —Bellamy Young (as Mellie Grant)

This year, Scandal finishes its final season. As the show joins the ranks of cultural artifacts featuring iconic female characters, who better to give a (imagined) farewell address than Mellie Grant (actually, Bellamy Young), the only female president the United States has got (now)?

“Here we are. On the precipice. Beginning our next chapters side by side. I don’t know where each of you is on your path, but I like to think that we’re all on the road together. Make no mistake: Every choice is vital, no matter where you are on your journey. Maybe your heart just got broken, or you just fell in love, or you’re figuring out how to move us back from our climate crisis, or maybe right now you’re choosing how to respond to the person who’s trolling you IRL or online.

“I’d like to offer this to us all as we meet our moments side by side this fall: Let us be warriors of light. Let us choose grace and inclusion and love at every juncture. Let us build an infrastructure of connection, within ourselves, to our deepest soul and highest spirit, but also with one another.

“We are all connected. It feels like we forget that. All these beautiful individual lives we’re living are creating the future we’ll inhabit together. Take impeccable care of one another and, in that way, of ourselves. Let’s all be warriors of light.”
