Chaplain recruiting sentinels

Guard of Honour - - NEWS - MAJ DWAYNE BOS

The NCR is home to many units, each with unique missions and focusses. With this complex landscape, the traditional role of the chaplain, which many will be accustomed to on bases, is virtually impossible. A ministry of presence is required to build up relationships, morale and trust with units and with our personnel. The Sentinel Program is the solution.

The Sentinel Program, with chain of command (CoC) support, will identify volunteers who are caring and empathetic to be a supportive, proactive presence in units. The Sentinel will be trained by the chaplain OPI to be sensitive to the needs of co- workers, and will be in direct contact with the chaplaincy. The chaplaincy, in turn, will provide additional training, advice and reception of referrals.

The CoC is responsible for ensuring that the religious, moral and spiritual needs of personnel are met, so that the end result is the accomplishment of the unit’s mission. The Sentinels are both active and passive. The Sentinel is encouraged to never pass a fault and to provide practical help to encourage and support members seeking help or in need of a listening ear.

A good Sentinel shows respect, works at creating a relationship of trust with others, and provides discrete referrals. The Sentinel will not have the same level of confidentiality as the chaplain; but, will provide a professional l evel of discretion when speaking to people. Working with the Sentinels allows chaplains to form a network that will keep them more aware of the issues affecting unit members, while enabling t hem t o i ntervene more rapidly. The Sentinel Program has the potential to be extremely useful in the complex NCR milieu; allowing chaplains to provide a proactive approach to unit ministry and being more able t o advise t he commanders on the state of the morale, spiritual well-being and resiliency of their members.
