Stan’s brother

Garnet Rogers performs at Albert & Crown Pub Sunday evening

-

Folk singer/songwriter, Garnet Rogers, is performing at Albert & Crown Pub in Alberton Sunday evening.

In a darkened bedroom, lit only by the amber glow from an old floor model radio, two young brothers aged 6 and 12 lay in their beds, listening to the country music broadcasts from the Grand Ol’ Opry, and practicing their harmonies. Two years later, the youngest one was playing the definitive 8-year-old’s version of “Desolation Row” on his ukulele. He soon abandoned that instrument to teach himself the flute, violin and guitar. Within 10 years, and barely out of high school, Garnet Rogers was on the road as a full-time working musician with his older brother Stan. Together they formed what was one of the most influential acts in North American folk music.

Since Stan’s death in 1983, Garnet has pursued his own career.

He will be travelling to P.E.I. this weekend for an appearance at the Albert & Crown Pub & Eatery in Alberton on Sunday, after two shows at the Trailside Inn and Café in Mount Stewart. Garnet Rogers is a man with a powerful physical presence – close to six and a half feet tall – with a voice to match. With his smooth baritone and incredible range, his music is literate and passionate.

An optimist at heart, he sings extraordinary songs about people who are not obvious heroes and of the small victories of the everyday. As memorable as his songs, his humour moves his audience from tears to laughter and back again. Resolutely independent, Garnet has turned down offers from major labels to do his music his own way. Stopping in Alberton on his Canada-U.S. tour, he performs at The Albert & Crown Aug. 28 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 at the door or by calling the Albert & Crown at (902) 853-0000.
