The Kensington Monaghan Farms Wild will represent P.E.I. at the Atlantic major midget hockey championship tournament in Miramichi, N.B. this week. The Wild, who will begin play Thursday, defeated the Charlottetown Bulk Carriers Pride in a winner-take-all seventh game in Kensington on Saturday night.

Assistant captain Zach Thususka and captain Tayler Read delivered when the Kensington Monaghan Farms Wild needed it the most. Thususka scored two key highlight-reel goals, and assisted on another, while Read collected three helpers to lead the Wild past the Charlottetown Bulk Carriers Pride 6-1 in Game 7 of the best-of-seven provincial major midget hockey championship on Saturday night. Thususka, who had nine points in the seven games, was named the series most valuable player.

“I honestly thought a lot of guys could have received the award,” said Thususka, 18. “I’m appreciative to get it.” Thususka one-timed a tapeto-tape pass from Reid, who was positioned in the right-wing corner, to give the Wild a 2-1 lead at 9:36 of the first period. “I was 1-on-2 so I was delaying to see if anybody was coming with me,” explained Read. “Zach beat his guy to the net, I just happened to find him and he buried it.” Thususka went high glove side on a breakaway at 6:18 of the second period to open up a 4-1 lead, and bring Kensington’s supporters to their feet at a lively Community Gardens. “Thomas Rennie worked his tail off to get the puck out of the zone, and give me the pass,” said Thususka, who had 27 points, including nine goals, in 30 regular-season games.

It marked a perfect end to Thususka’s final major midget game on P.E.I.

“It’s a great way to go out,” smiled the son of Mike and Cathy Thususka of Summerside.
