Ban the Bomb march and rally in Charlottetown Saturday

-

The Island Peace Committee will host a Ban the Bomb solidarity march and rally on Saturday, June 17, beginning at 2 p.m. in front of Province House, Grafton Street, Charlottetown.

The United Nations is now negotiating a treaty that will ban and prohibit nuclear weapons. People are organizing all over the world to support the Ban the Bomb negotiations. The Charlottetown event will coincide with a massive women’s march and rally in New York City to ban the bomb.

Marian White, who is with the Island Peace Committee, is urging Islanders to attend the march and rally to send a message to the Canadian government that it must support the negotiations at the United Nations to ban nuclear weapons.

“It’s a disgrace that Canada is one of the countries that will not support the United Nations treaty to ban nuclear weapons,” says White.

A United Nations nuclear weapon ban treaty if passed will be a legally binding international agreement to prohibit nuclear weapons, leading towards their total elimination. Negotiations on the treaty began Wednesday and will continue until July 7.
