Hurricanes sweep Chargers
Mount Allison visits for key games Thursday
It was a good Saturday for the Holland Hurricanes’ basketball teams.
The Holland College squads swept a pair of Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association games from the visiting Crandall Chargers.
The final score of the women’s game was 92-63 while the men’s contest ended 119-85.
Both Hurricanes’ teams are back in action on Thursday as the Mount Allison Mounties visit the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement in two games with playoff implications.
The women’s game is set to tip off at 6 p.m., with the men’s contest following at 8 p.m. The Holland College women are in second place at 11-4 (won-lost), two points ahead of the Mounties (10-4). The men’s Hurricanes (161) hold a four-point lead over Mount Allison (14-3). Each team has four games remaining.
Women
In the women’s match, the Hurricanes held a slim 19-17 lead after the first quarter, but an impressive second quarter resulted in a 46-28 lead at halftime.
Holland College continued to build on that momentum, and led 65-40 through three quarters.
Tyleigha Nelson led all Hurricanes’ scorers with 24 points along with eight rebounds, four assists and three steals. Breauna Rivoli-Johnson added 21 points, six rebounds, six assists, two steals and a block while Lexi MacInnis had 20 points, five rebounds, three assists, four steals and three blocks.
Jayla Verney also reached double figures with 16 points, six rebounds, two assists, one steal and three blocks. Madison McHatten poured in 21 points to lead Crandall (0-15) while Emily Briggs added 13 off the bench.
Men
In the men’s contest, the Hurricanes jumped out to an early 33-22 lead, and would extend that margin to 63-43 at the half.
The Hurricanes were in front 93-72 after three quarters.
The Hurricanes’ Roosevelt Whyley led all scorers with 30 points along with nine rebounds, three assists, four steals and a block. Michael Kayeye and Chase Bowden each had 16 points while Jace Colley chipped in with 15 and Marcus Dawkins had 14 as all five Holland College starters reached double digits in scoring. Bowden added 14 rebounds, five assists and one block as he recorded another doubledouble.
Dawkins chipped in with four rebounds, three assists, six steals and two blocks while Colley added five rebounds, four assists and a block. Trey David (22) and Hassan Maidal (21) were the top point-getters for the thirdplace Chargers (12-6).
