Saints court sports teams sweep Sioux Lookout
St. Thomas Aquinas Saints court sport teams hosted the Sioux Lookout Warriors last week in basketball and volleyball action.
The Saints swept the four games over the Warriors in the NorWOSSA‘A’ league on Thursday, Oct. 5.
Spencer Harasemchuk led the Saints senior girls basketball team with 18 points in a 49-35 victory, while Chelsea Henderson put up 13 points. In junior girls action the Saints dominated the Warriors 60-13 with Alyssa Turcotte leading the way with 18 points and Jamieson Harasemchuk adding 10.
In boys volleyball, the senior Saints and junior Saints both swept their fiveset matches. The seniors won 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-16) and the juniors won 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-19).
The Saints teams travel to Ignace for games on Tuesday, Oct. 10 before hosting the Rainy River Owls on Thursday, Oct. 12.
Turkey trot There were 31 students from Beaver Brae Secondary School who made the trek to Dryden for the annual turkey trot cross-country run on Friday, Oct. 6 with teachers Janet Hyslop and Mike Kraynyk. More than 350 students from the northwest participated in the event.
Five Beaver Brae high school students took part but most of the Broncos were in Grade 7 or 8.
Lane Vanderwettering, a Grade 7 student placed first in the Grade 7-8 boys three kilometre race, while Sophie Trask placed seventh in the Grade 7-8 girls three km race and Marlies Illot was fifth in the girls five km open.
The Broncos also piloted the inaugural bike race at the event.
Each student earned points for their school. Final results weren’t available at press time.
