Saints court sports teams sweep Sioux Look­out

St. Thomas Aquinas Saints court sport teams hosted the Sioux Look­out War­riors last week in bas­ket­ball and vol­ley­ball ac­tion.

The Saints swept the four games over the War­riors in the NorWOSSA‘A’ league on Thurs­day, Oct. 5.

Spencer Harasem­chuk led the Saints se­nior girls bas­ket­ball team with 18 points in a 49-35 vic­tory, while Chelsea Hen­der­son put up 13 points. In ju­nior girls ac­tion the Saints dom­i­nated the War­riors 60-13 with Alyssa Tur­cotte lead­ing the way with 18 points and Jamieson Harasem­chuk adding 10.

In boys vol­ley­ball, the se­nior Saints and ju­nior Saints both swept their fiveset matches. The se­niors won 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-16) and the ju­niors won 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-19).

The Saints teams travel to Ig­nace for games on Tues­day, Oct. 10 be­fore host­ing the Rainy River Owls on Thurs­day, Oct. 12.

Tur­key trot There were 31 stu­dents from Beaver Brae Sec­ondary School who made the trek to Dry­den for the an­nual tur­key trot cross-coun­try run on Friday, Oct. 6 with teach­ers Janet Hys­lop and Mike Kraynyk. More than 350 stu­dents from the north­west par­tic­i­pated in the event.

Five Beaver Brae high school stu­dents took part but most of the Bron­cos were in Grade 7 or 8.

Lane Van­der­wet­ter­ing, a Grade 7 stu­dent placed first in the Grade 7-8 boys three kilo­me­tre race, while So­phie Trask placed sev­enth in the Grade 7-8 girls three km race and Mar­lies Il­lot was fifth in the girls five km open.

The Bron­cos also pi­loted the in­au­gu­ral bike race at the event.

Each stu­dent earned points for their school. Fi­nal results weren’t avail­able at press time.
