If you want to succeed as a professional artist, you need to have both a creative mind and an organized one.

That’s what local artist Melissa wanted to impress upon her daughter, Ruby Klippenstein, and her two friends, Jordyn Gravelle-Fortes and Elizabeth Zollino, who are all Grade 9 students at St. Thomas Aquinas High School. The three students were in Jean’s garage studio on Wednesday, Nov. 1 for Take Our Kids to Work Day, an annual event that takes place in workplaces across the country and gives students a chance to see different careers up close.

“I’ve been really into art for a long time, and when Ruby offered to have me over for the day, I was really excited to see what it was like to be a professional artist,” said Gravelle-Fortes. “I thought that would be really fun.”

The day started with a tour of Jean’s studio and learning about art commissions and prices and how to properly package an art piece to bring it to a display venue. That day, they brought paintings to Image One Designs.

Jean said she wanted to show her daughter and her friends the administrative aspects of a professional art career. “They’re all so talented and all three of them could go into this professionally, but there’s so much to know about the business side of it,” she said.

In her day-to-day work, Jean said she does commissions and also supplies galleries with new paintings as she needs to balance commission work “as well as the natural flow of what you are really inspired to paint.”
