Kenora business profiled in BDC report.
A Kenora business has been featured as a case study in a BDC report on effective business acquisition.
Bison Fire Protection, which has locations in Kenora and Winnipeg and other locations in Manitoba, is profiled in a BDC study on what buyers look for when purchasing or selling a business. Rob Read, the president of Bison Fire, says in the report that he goes through every step of a due diligence process to make sure the acquisition is viable and won’t risk compromising his company.
“Over the last few years, we’ve gone into different areas with plans and in some cases decided to purchase companies,” said Read in a phone interview. “I guess BDC looked at that and said this is probably something we want to learn a little bit more about.”
When it came to their business acquisition in Kenora, Read explained that they had partnered with the Kenora District Fire and Safety company for a long time. “We’d given them support when they needed it on certain recharging or suppression system work, that sort of thing,” he said.
When the owner decided to retire, she approached Read with the offer to buy her company, which they had talked about “loosely” for a couple of years, and Read said he saw the opportunity to expand into the northwestern region.
“I thought this will be a good fit for what we’re doing,” he said. “I like the small markets and something that has that larger surrounding area.”
Read also said he felt the area was underserved in terms of professional fire protection. “I do see some big industry growing and opportunities where these bigger industrial and commercial customers are looking for a higher level of fire protection,” he said.
