Anthopoulos happy personally, professionally with move to Atlanta
I’d heard such good things, great place to raise a family, great place to be, everybody’s really nice and kind.” Alex Anthopoulos, Atlanta general manager
CARLSBAD, Calif. — Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos as been in Atlanta for a year now and it’s fair to say things are going swimmingly.
The young Braves team made the post-season and won a division title for the first time since 2013.
Anthopoulos is shopping for a corner outfielder, a closer and a catcher this off-season. Of course, Anthopoulos has only been with the Braves for a year, but he couldn’t have joined the organization at a better time. With the winning, attendance is up, as are TV ratings in Atlanta.
On a personal note, Anthopoulos said he and his family have adjusted well to living in the U.S. south.
“I’d heard such good things, great place to raise a family, great place to be, everybody’s really nice and kind,” said the Montreal native who was the GM of the Blue Jays from late 2009 until 2015.
“Our kids really enjoy it, my wife does as well. Obviously my wife’s family is still all in Toronto, so hour-and-a-half flight and they get to spend the summers back in Toronto. So I like the fact that (the kids) get a little bit of a blend (Canada-U.S. South).
“I think the biggest adjustment for my kids was, my eight year old, who’s at school, they said they were having barbecue for lunch and you know in Canada, you don’t get barbecue (for lunch). She thought it was getting a grill or something. We had to explain to her that is the type of food that you find in the south.
“But you know, I waiting for them to start saying ‘ya’ll,’ ” Anthopoulos said of his kids. “There’s even times that I find that I’m about to say it.”
Atlanta Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos speaks at a news conference last year in Atlanta. The former Blue Jays GM and Montreal native says he and his family are happy in Georgia.
