Sep­tem­ber’s Spee­ding Soap­boxes

For the 38th year in a row, kids will be drag ra­cing down a hill in ho­me­made cars while pa­rents cheer and po­lice check for speed. The An­nual Soap­box Der­by in Dor­val will com­man­deer Fé­ne­lon Bou­le­vard for the af­ter­noon and host races for 50 se­ven to twel­veyear-old kids. Star­ted by Jean-guy Au­bry and Pierre Boyer, the fa­mi­ly event is now a com­mu­ni­ty ins­ti­tu­tion. Race day will be Sun­day, Sep­tem­ber 24, from 10 am to 3 pm and host Dor­val Main Streets have ad­ded some ac­ti­vi­ties and guests to make it a full day of fun for fa­mi­lies, in­clu­ding food from Sub­way, Bar Lai­tier Non­na, Lo­ry Fleurs, and Ca­fé Gour­met. Bom­bar­dier will bring its own soap­box ra­cer and the École de tech­no­lo­gie su­pé­rieure(ets) will show­case a pro­to­type ve­hicle built by their stu­dents. Both will of­fer chil­dren hands on en­gi­nee­ring ac­ti­vi­ties as well.

All par­ti­ci­pants will be of­fe­red a sou­ve­nir, but on­ly one will re­ceive the co­ve­ted Ger­ry’s Cup, a prize for the most crea­tive hel­met de­si­gn in ho­nor of the late long-time vo­lun­teer Ger­ry Au­bry. Th­ree win­ners from last year are par­ti­ci­pa­ting again this year and will vie for the title of fas­test Soap­box once more. (DC)
