West Nile virus detected in Ottawa

Le Reflet (The News) - - ACTUALITIES - NEWS -

Ottawa Public Health (OPH) has confirmed the first confirmed presence of West Nile virus in the municipality this year. The virus source is the Northern house mosquito, which thrives in human-inhabited areas. One infected mosquito has been confirmed in the urbanized area of the city. The OPH stated it will proceed with a “proactive plan” to deal with the situation through regular weekly monitoring of man-made standing water sites like ditches and storm water management ponds on municipal land. The OPH will also apply a larvicide in these areas. The bacteria in the biological control method attacks mosquito larvae but does not harm anything else. Homeowners are urged to make sure to drain any sources of standing water on their property and take measures to protect themselves from mosquitoes when outside.– Gregg Chamberlain
