Open space for youth sum­mit rep


Lo­cal high school and col­lege stu­dents with an interest in the en­vi­ron­ment may want to get their names in for one of the seats avai­lable in a pro­vin­cial youth sum­mit la­ter in Sep­tem­ber.

The South Na­tion Con­ser­va­tion Au­tho­ri­ty (SNC) is part­ne­ring with On­ta­rio Na­ture on hos­ting the 2017 Youth Sum­mit for Bio­di­ver­si­ty and Lea­der­ship. The three-day confe­rence is Sept. 22 to 24 at the YMCA Ge­ne­va Park in Orillia.

The SNC will spon­sor one of the youth lea­ders eli­gible to at­tend the confe­rence. Youth lea­ders, ages 14 to 19, from across the pro­vince will at­tend in­ter­ac­tive work­shops on sus­tai­na­bi­li­ty, na­ture ex­plo­ra­tion, and cli­mate ac­tion.

“We’re ex­ci­ted to work with lo­cal youth to pro­vide them with op­por­tu­ni­ties to gain a bet­ter un­ders­tan­ding of en­vi­ron­ment is­sues and in­sights in­to sound, sus­tai­nable prac­tices,” said Hol­ly Nyen­kamp, SNC com­mu­ni­ca­tion and ou­treach of­fi­cial. “We in­vite youth to write us a let­ter ex­plai­ning lo­cal en­vi­ron­men­tal is­sues wi­thin their com­mu­ni­ty. We would al­so like to know what par­ti­ci­pants hope to gain from the sum­mit.”

SNC spon­sor­ship will co­ver the cost for work­shop par­ti­ci­pa­tion, ac­com­mo­da­tions, and meals du­ring the sum­mit. On­ta­rio Na­ture staff and vo­lun­teers will pro­vide su­per­vi­sion du­ring the wee­kend event.
