Bagotville at work in Romania
Since the beginning of August, military personal from 2 Wing Bagotville and 3 Wing have been deployed to Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base in Romania to prepare the facilities for operation Reassurance, part of the NATO assurance and deterrence measures.
At a change of responsibility ceremony held at Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base on August 29, 2018, the British transferred the NATO mandate to Canadians in the presence of the Commander of the Romanian Air Force, the General Pana. LCol Tim Woods, from 425 ETAC, took command of the Canadian contingent.
As part of NATO's collective defense, the Royal Canadian Air Force is some- times called upon to ensure the sovereignty of the airspace of certain NATO member states that do not have an air force. This is the case in Iceland for example. In the case of Romania, their air forces already provide surveillance, which is why we are talking here about a reinforcement mission while five CF- 18s complement the Romanian squadrons.
