Women in science: Regina hosts CCWESTT conference
Canadian Coalition on Women in Engineering, Science, Trades and Technology
Saskatchewan has a long road ahead of it when it comes to gender diversity in science professions. Currently less than 10 per cent of Saskatchewan registered engineers are female, and the story is much the same in geoscience.
As part of the continuing work to boost the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan (APEGS) female membership, a volunteer team helped stage the 2014 conference of the Canadian Coalition on Women in Engineering, Science, Trades and Technology on May 22 to 24, 2014 in Regina.
The conference drew over 250 delegates representing every province and territory in Canada.
“APEGS signed on early as the organizational host and provided not only space and teleconference facilities, but also financial support to create and deliver the first-ever Teachers’ Program,” said committee chair Dena McMartin, P.Eng.
McMartin sees many benefits flowing from the conference. “We were able to showcase Saskatchewan talent, skills, volunteerism and warmth through our conference program, special events and activities, and commitment to helping others less fortunate. Throughout the conference, we offered a wide array of opportunities for discussion, debate, inspiration and networking.”
