Man accused of assaulting 2-year-old makes appearance
GIRLFRIEND, WHO IS MOTHER OF VICTIM, ALSO FACING CHARGES
A man accused of assaulting his girlfriend’s two-year-old son made a brief appearance in Lethbridge provincial court Wednesday, but only long enough to have the case adjourned until later in the month when the boy’s mother will also be in court.
The 26-year-old woman, who made a court appearance Sept. 29, is charged with assault. Her 32-year old boyfriend, who appeared Wednesday by closed-circuit TV from the Lethbridge Correctional Centre, faces a charge of assault causing bodily harm. Neither can be identified under a publication ban and they’re both scheduled to return to court Oct. 27.
Lethbridge Police charged the pair after receiving an anonymous tip Sept. 21 alerting them to suspected child abuse. Working with Child and Family Services, investigators entered the home to check on the child and noticed injuries to his face and neck. The child was moved to Chinook Regional Hospital where further inspection revealed more injuries.
The mother told police the child had fallen, but medical staff determined his injuries were not consistent with a fall. The boy was placed in the care of relatives.
