Greig paces AAA Hurricanes

It was a high-scoring, three-point and ultimately undefeated weekend on the road for the Lethbridge midget AAA Hurricanes.

Heading north for a two-game Alberta Midget Hockey League road swing to the Edmonton area, the Hurricanes tied the Edmonton CAC Gregg Distributo­rs 5-5 Saturday with some late-game offence before blanking the Leduc Chrysler Oil Kings 7-0 Sunday.

The tie and the win moves the Canes to 22-4-5 and keeps the team atop the AMHL, three points ahead of the Red Deer Optimist Chiefs (20-4-6).

It was also a big stats weekend for Hurricanes forward Ridly Greig, who collected 10 points.

In Saturday’s tie, the Canes trailed 3-2 after two periods and 5-3 heading into the last minute before scoring twice in the final 48 seconds.

Chandler Aleman scored for Lethbridge with 48 seconds left and Ronan Seeley added the equalizer with 12 seconds to play.

Kadyn Chabot scored in the first period for Lethbridge and Greig scored twice, once late in the second and again early in the third.

Greig added two assists for a fourpoint outing. Seeley and Chabot each had two helpers for three points. Byron Fancy made 18 saves. In Sunday’s win over the Oil Kings, the Canes scored four times in the first period en route to the shutout as Greig scored four goals and added two assists.

Carson Dyck added five assists and Chabot had three.

Michael Horon, Reece Becker and Keegan McDowell scored the other Lethbridge goals.

Carl Tetachuk stopped 18 shots to earn the shutout.

The Hurricanes are home Saturday when they host the Lloydminst­er Bandit Energy Bobcats at 4:15 p.m. at Nicholas Sheran Arena.
