McKech­nie lifts Horns to vic­tory over Cougars

Sam McKech­nie’s goal with just over a minute re­main­ing lifted the Uni­ver­sity of Leth­bridge Pronghorns to a 3-2 vic­tory over the Uni­ver­sity of Regina Cougars in Canada West men’s hockey ac­tion Fri­day in Regina.

It was the first league vic­tory for new Pronghorns head coach Mur­ray Nys­trom.

The teams bat­tled through a score­less first pe­riod be­fore the Horns scored the lone goal of the sec­ond pe­riod by Tay­lor Fisher.

Horns went up 2-0 7:16 into the third, but the Cougars bat­tled back on goals by Arthur Miller and Tate Cough­lin with Couglin’s goal com­ing with only 1:33 left in the game.

How­ever, McKech­nie scored the game-win­ner 29 sec­onds later for the Horns’ first win of the Canada West sea­son.

Rus­sell Maxwell had a pair of as­sists for the Pronghorns, who were out­shot 33-31 by the Cougars. Gar­rett Hugh­son earned the win in net for U of L.

The teams meet again this af­ter­noon.

Mean­while at Ni­cholas Sheran Arena the Pronghorn women were blanked 2-0 by the Regina Cougars.

The teams play again to­day at 2 p.m. at Ni­cholas Sheran.
