Saint-lazare teens asked to help spend $10,000

L'Etoile - - IN OTHER WORDS -

As one of her first official duties as the interim mayor of Saint-lazare, Brigitte Asselin challenged the town's young people to help decide the best way to spend $10,000 in municipal funds.

The offer, made last week during a press conference held at a youth clubhouse situated at Parc Bédard, was part of a partnership the Town has with Youth Forum Vallée-du-haut-saintLaurent.

And next weekend all Saint-lazare teens aged 12 to 18 are invited to attend a brainstorming session where participants will be asked to share their thoughts and ideas about the best way to spend the money, as well as their thoughts on the future of Saint-lazare.

Asselin and district 4 councillor Michel Lambert will attend the meeting.

The event, which will include popcorn and a free meal for participants, will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 28 at the Community Centre, located at 1301, Rue du Bois in SaintLazare.

Asselin said the move is a nod to the town's ranking as having the second youngest population in Quebec

"We're talking close to 6,000 youngsters out of 19,119 residents," Asselin noted, adding since youths in town are such a big part of the population, the municipal council wanted to give teens" a process that will allow them to express their opinions.

"By allowing participants to decide how to spend a $10,000 budgetary envelope, council wants to show the seriousness of their commitment to the forum and its youth," Asselin said.

And while the forum will put the kids in "the centre of the action," it will also give them a taste of the democratic process.

Saying teens often complain about being bored, with little to do, Asselin further challenged parents to encourage their kids to participate in the process.

"It's the perfect opportunity for all Saint-lazare parents to tell their teens it is time to make a difference," she said.

In addition to the free meal, sure to be a hit with the young target audience, the Town will also give a free pair of ear buds to the first 75 participants, while entertainment will be provided by Cirque du Soleil artist Pierre Sauvé, who is known for his comedy workshops.

Asselin closed by thanking Youth Forum Vallée-du-haut-saint-laurent for its support, useful tips and a financial contribution of $1,000.

Regional youth organizations including Club Optimiste, Club Richelieu and Club Octogone were also singled out for their continued support.
