John Abbott to host CCAA men’s basketball championship
Preparations underway at Sainte-anne college
TThe Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association will hold its 2013 CCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship at John Abbott College in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue.
he announcement means there is much to be done before the CEGEP is ready to welcome champion college basketball teams from across the country next year.
The national tournament will take place from March 14-16, 2013.
Eight of Canada’s top college teams will compete in the event, and as hosts, the John Abbott Islanders men’s team is guaranteed a spot in the tournament.
Steve Shaw, head of athletics at John Abbott, said the college has twice hosted the same tournament and is ready to do it again.
“It’s the Canadian version of March Madness for college teams, and it’s really exciting to watch, and for us, to host,” Shaw said, adding the school has a history of hosting provincial, national and international events.
And like any good host, Shaw said there are things that must first be done in order to make the place look as good as possible.
“We are going to have the gym floors redone, add a new score clock and increase our seating capacity from 700 to about 1,200,” he noted.
All should cost the school close to $80,000, half of which will come from government assistance grants.
John Abbott previously hosted the CCAA Men’s Basketball National Championships in 1990 and 1996. Tournament passes will be sold next year for those wanting to attend all three days of the event.
