‘Need is constant’

The Pin­court As­so­cia­tion of Vo­lun­teer Fi­re­figh­ters is ho­ping people come out in large num­bers Thurs­day to give blood, so­me­thing they say is constant­ly nee­ded.

The Jan. 10 blood drive will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Fau­bourg de l’Île shop­ping centre, lo­ca­ted at 101, bou­le­vard Car­di­nal-Lé­ger, in Pin­court. Or­ga­ni­zers will be se­tup and ready to re­ceive do­nors at the site of the for­mer Block­bus­ter vi­deo store.

Ac­cor­ding to Hé­ma-Qué­bec, do­na­ting blood can of­ten make a life or death dif­fe­rence in the lives of sick people. The or­ga­ni­za­tion says the spe­cia­li­zed bo­di­ly fluid is a unique and ir­re­pla­ceable resource for which science has found no sub­sti­tute. The need for blood is constant, they add. Hé­maQué­bec sta­tis­tics show so­meone in Que­bec needs blood eve­ry 80 se­conds.

Or­ga­ni­zers hope to reach a mi­ni­mum of 125 do­nors du­ring Thurs­day’s ef­fort.

Do­nors must be 18 years old or ol­der and

meet Hé­ma-Que­bec’s eli­gi­bi­li­ty cri­te­ria.

Who can do­nate

The blood health agen­cy en­cou­rages people to get in­to the ha­bit of re­gu­lar­ly gi­ving blood. Ac­cor­ding to their web­site, main­tai­ning a col­lec­tive blood sup­ply is the res­pon­si­bi­li­ty of all Que­be­cers.

In ad­di­tion to being of legal age, Hé­ma-Qué­bec will ac­cept do­nors who are in good health. Do­nors can give blood six times a year, or eve­ry 56 days.

Hé­ma-Qué­bec says it must com­ply with strict re­gu­la­tions in or­der to en­sure pu­blic sa­fe­ty and ve­ri­fy the qua­li­fi­ca­tions of all would-be do­nors, whe­ther do­na­ting whole blood, plas­ma or pla­te­lets.
