Groundbreaking tax session a success

Federal MP hosts free info meeting

L'Etoile - - IN OTHER WORDS -

NDP MPJamie Nicholls and fellow NDP MP Peter Julian of B.C., an expert on the disability tax credit, hosted the groundbreaking meeting that was free to attend in order to explain the tax’s eligibility criteria.

Those attending the meeting organized by Nicholls and held at the Île-Perrot community centre, were able to learn more about disability tax credits, which Nicholls says many Canadians forget to claim each year.

Nicholls and Julian answered questions about the credit that can total up to $1,380 each year.

“I am proud to have organized the very first meeting of its kind in my riding,” said Nicholls. “We were fortunate to be able to count on the know-how and dedication of Julian, who I work closely with on the Hill. New Democrats want to demystify the role of the federal government for citizens and this type of event is very much in line with that

Though tax season has come and gone, a first of its kind information session hosted last month was declared a success when more than sixty residents from the region attended an April 21 information session in L’Île-Perrot that aimed to explain a disability tax credit that could add up to more than $1,000 a year.

He said the Conservative government cut the public service positions formerly responsible for relaying this information to Canadians. “These are existing benefits that Canadians have a right to,” Nicholls said, adding he feels the Harper government’s policy means people may not know about them.

Eligibility for the tax credit is based on the level of difficulty in carrying out the basic activities of daily living such as walking, feeding, speaking, hearing, or bowel or bladder functions.

Nicholls noted that the credit is transferable to another family member, while it is also possible to request a revision and claim up to ten years of retroactivity.

Those unable to attend the meeting but who would like more information about claiming the credit in the future can call the constituency office at 1 866 323-8518.
